Christmas travel latest as weather warnings issued with flights cancelled, trains delayed and roads closed

Christmas getaway plans could be at risk this weekend, as heavy winds were forecast to batter parts of the country ahead of 25 December.

Gusts as high as 60 to 70 mph are due to hit the north of Scotland and northern and central areas of England on Sunday, forecasters have said.

Two separate yellow wind warnings have been issued, with the Met Office advising the public to expect travel disruption, damage to buildings and power cuts, while the rest of the country may see showers.

On Saturday, a yellow rain warning will be in place across parts of Wales, lasting until the evening of 24 December.

It comes as the transport network recovers from the knock-on effects of Storm Pia, which brought chaos across the country on Thursday, cancelling flights, delaying trains and closing roads.
