Gavin and Stacey series 3 ending: a recap of where we left things at the end of last season

The wait is almost over for Gavin and Stacey fans, with a special Xmas episode on the way.

Gavin and Stacey fans were delighted to discover earlier this year that the adventures of Gavin, Stacey, Smithy and Nessa were not quite over yet.

Although the third and final season wrapped up over ten years ago, the gang will return to the screen once more for a 2019 Christmas special.

Mathew Horne, James Corden, Ruth Jones, Joanna Page and the whole supporting cast have all signed on for the hour-long festive episode.

Given that it has been over a decade, many fans will have forgotten exactly how things left off at the end of season three.

With that in mind, here’s a quick refresher.

How did season three end?

The big, big news at the end of the show’s third season was the revelation that Stacey was pregnant. Having been told earlier that she and Gavin might be unable to conceive, fans were delighted to find that their favourite couple would be becoming parents after all.

Announcing a pregnancy is a classic way to finish off a popular show, but you can’t beat a wedding when it comes to going out with a bang.

However, Nessa and Dave’s big day did not go exactly as planned. While most of season three was spend building towards it, things got a little rocky when Dave found out about Nessa and Smithy’s Billericay tryst.

They powered through and made it all the way to the aisle, only for Smithy to come bursting through the doors and declare his love for Nessa – or at least to declare that she didn’t love Dave and was making a terrible mistake.

When Nessa initially refused to admit that this was true, Dave took it upon himself to call off the wedding. The pair shook hands and parted as friends.

The finale ended with Smithy and Nessa seemingly coupled up in Barry together, although it was unclear exactly what their relationship status was.

What will happen in the Christmas special?

From what we have been told, much of the new episode will focus on Gavin and Stacey’s life as parents, ten years down the line.

In an interview with Radio Five Live, Mathew Horne confirmed that the Christmas episode would find Gavin as “a dad with an almost grown up child…suffice to say he’s a little bit tired.”

The first question to be answered will be, what sort of parents do Gavin and Stacey make? Has their relationship survived intact or has family life taken its toll?

And then there is Nessa and Smithy – have they finally managed to work things out between them and form something like a functional relationship? Or have they spent the last ten years in the same on-again, off-again routine?

Beyond the fate of the show’s two central pairs, the series has left a couple of other matters open for all this time which may finally be resolved. First and foremost – will we finally find out what happened on Jason and Bryn’s fishing trip?

They have refused to talk about what went down, so all we know is that whatever happened defied the laws of gravity but not those of the UK, and that they only did it because they were so cold. Perhaps, at long last, this dark chapter in the story will finally be revealed.

Then there is Pete and Dawn – have the ever-bickering older couple managed to hold things together all this time, or did one of them finally make good on their threat to cut and run?

With so many questions still to be answered after all these years, fans have one more reason to look forward to Christmas.

When is the Christmas special?

The hour-long reunion episode will take place on Christmas Day at 8.30pm on BBC One.
